Symbolism in Logo Design

When getting your Logo Design, it’s important to think carefully about what it will convey to others. Every shape, line and color in a logo will send a message to all who see it. Much has been written on the psychology of color and the effect that shape and imagery can have on viewers. But this prose will discuss the importance of having your logo mean something.
I’m not implying that each color you choose in a logo needs to represent a company value the way white represents purity in America’s red, white and blue flag, but thought should be put into the design to make sure each stroke has a place and that the design helps convey to others what your company does, what you stand for, what you provide and why people should choose you.
Consider, for example, the Citibank logo. You wouldn’t think the company spent much time on the logo, especially considering that all it comprises is a lowercase sans serif font and a small, arched red line. But the logo does mean something. The small font makes the large financial services company seem approachable–the same thing AT&T has done–and the red line actually represents an umbrella, with the ‘t’ serving as the handle. The umbrella symbolizes the security and protection you will likely receive if you use the company’s services.
It’s possible that the average person would never think about all that, but at the very minimum, the logo looks nice and professional, and the red line does provide a more secure feeling than a lightening rod shape would.
What is too much symbolism?
Perhaps the biggest mistake a person can make when trying to incorporate symbolism into their logo is going overboard with it. It becomes a problem when too many elements are included that no one will ever figure out or care about. There are infinite approaches to designing your brochure and an endless variety of styles a brochure can take. I’ll leave it up to you to decide what works best for you from a marketing standpoint, but there are a few cardinal rules you should remember for any brochure design that will help it be more successful.
Make it Untossable
Okay, untossable isn’t a word, but let’s face it: most brochures get thrown away. It should be your designer’s main priority to make sure yours doesn’t—at least not right away. By using basic Logo Design techniques: placement, contrast and color, your designer should make your brochure stand out and be recognizable right away.
I call this approach the billboard philosophy. You only have about three seconds with a billboard on the freeway to send a message before drivers pass it and move on to the next ad. If you have a simple message with strong graphic design, people will remember yours. Use the same mentality on your brochures, and people are more likely to actually open it and see what you have to offer.
A brochure that’s interesting, shocking, funny or different in another way will always be more successful than one that looks professional but not engaging. Give your designer some room to be creative.
Clear Messaging
Now let’s address the next important point: clear messaging. For brochures, good writing is as important as graphical layout. Many organizations try to cram way too much information into a brochure. Your text ought to focus on just one or two main points. Succinct, clear writing is an absolute must.

To Avoid a Conflict: Luckily there are professional standards regarding graphic design that can prevent most issues. It is essential that all parties approach the project with a sense of respect for each others expertise.
The Contract Should: Outline the approval process, the sign-off requirements, milestones, deadlines, and explain who will provide what. It may be prudent to have it written by an unbiased third party.
The Client Should: Bring their brand knowledge, vision and direction to the project; but utilize personal taste elsewhere. Be familiar with the designer’s portfolio and pricing before making the decision. Have clear expectations about the final product and make sure those expectations are properly communicated.
The Designer Should: Bring their intuition,Design Training, and experience to the project; but leave any excessive ego behind. Have an understanding of the brand’s concept and requirements. Adhere to copyrights, making sure there are no legal issues for the client. Communicate concepts clearly to the client.
Everyone Should: Know when to hold ‘em; know when to fold ‘em. This is just good advice in general.
To Handle an Issue: On that rare occasion when protocol is not enough, the project can still move forward. Keep in mind that design is a process. Don’t jump ship before the concept has had a chance to come to fruition.
Be Objective: These projects are not best left to personal preference. The designer probably knows best when it comes to pure aesthetics. However, the client will know their business, customers, and competitors better than anyone else. Sometimes a third party mediator can facilitate conversation.
Look at Quantitative Aspects of Visual Design: Going head to head over opinions is futile. Look at value, hue, texture, shape, position, orientation, size, proximity, similarity, continuity, closure, area, and symmetry. This puts design disagreements into a mutual context.
Run Testing: It may be possible to test websites against each other to see which design truly performs better. And although Logo Design contests are taboo in the design community, running an opinion poll to test two top concepts may be appropriate.

If used correctly, a tagline can be a powerful part of your marketing strategy. Creating a phrase of a few words to uniquely identify you (or your business) in all of your marketing materials helps you to cover two of the major ways that a prospect can immediately gather information in your business communications — the prospect sees both the images of your logo and Visual Vocabulary and the text in your tagline to learn more about your Logo Design.
The advantage of adding a tagline to other text that describes your business is that a tagline can appear on all of your marketing materials, including your business card, stationery, and other applications, where descriptive text either will not fit or is not appropriate.
Here are some tips on using a tagline in your marketing materials:
Pick one tagline and run with it.
It can be very difficult to settle on just one tagline. However, choosing one tagline and using it consistently throughout all of your materials will help your marketing materials to look consistent. The repetition of the tagline will also make your materials memorable. This consistency makes your business appear well-thought-out as opposed to scattered. Using a single, unified logo and tagline combination in all of your materials will help people recognize your business at first glance.
Decide: short tagline or long?
In general, short taglines are more memorable than long taglines. If you were to sit down and make a list of the taglines that you know, these taglines are likely to be three or four words long. The difficulty with using a short tagline for a small business is that you must then teach clients and prospects to identify your tagline with your business, which can be a difficult process, especially if your tagline is not descriptive of your business.

Should you put the tagline in the logo…?
Your logo’s graphic will be stronger if it’s enhanced with the words in your tagline, and the words in the tagline will be more memorable if they are reinforced by an image.
However, there are a few other factors to consider. A tagline in a logo must be rather short — otherwise, it will have to be placed in the logo in a small font size, and that will reduce the scalability of the logo to a text size that is legible.
Also, if your business name consists of more than two or three words, including the tagline in the logo might make the logo too wordy, which can lead to your business name being skipped over or ignored.

Another option is to use both a logo and a tagline in your materials, but to position the two apart from one another. This is a great option to consider because then your logo and tagline aren’t linked quite so strongly — if you need to eventually change your tagline, it will be easier to do so. You won’t lose as much brand equity if you change a tagline that is not directly attached to the logo.
